Sweetland Peer Tutoring

I have been involved with the peer tutoring center since Winter 2012, when I spent the first semester training and learning about different writing center pedagogies.  I owe a lot of my current thoughts about drafting, writing, and revising to this training process because it has opened my eyes to so many important aspects of writing that I did not appreciate before.  Under the guidance of Lila Nayden and Christine Modey, I believe that being a peer tutor for writing has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had since coming to college.  All the peer tutors here have formed such a close-knit community, and we are always encouraging each other to be the best tutors that we can be.

Take a look at our University of Michigan Sweetland Peer Tutoring mission statement:

“The Sweetland Center for Writing Peer Tutoring Program serves University of Michigan students in the collaborative writing process, to instill confidence in fellow writers, to help them evaluate and revise their own texts, and to facilitate the future development of the student as a writer. Writers come to us at various stages of the writing process, and we help them better understand assignments, improve drafts, as well as manage elements of style and grammar. No matter what kind of help that writers seek from us, we depend on writers to participate in the discussion and revision of any and every aspect of their papers.”

Within this section of my portfolio, you will find a “Statement of Purpose” that I created towards the end of Winter 2012.  It describes the kind of tutor I strive to be, based on ideals that I have explored and agreed with throughout my training and experience.  Additionally, you can read about my views on silence in the writing center, an underappreciated but important part of every tutoring session.
